Ian Paul Morrison, a native of the American Midwest, was born in Chicago’s suburban Hinsdale, Illinois where he attended elementary and high schools.
Morrison is a graduate of Chicago’s acclaimed Columbia College where as a freshman he entered the school’s advertising and design program. However, his skill as a draftsman and illustrator soon surfaced.

Based on his extraordinary drawing skills, members of the Columbia faculty encouraged Ian to focus on and develop his drawing and painting skills in order to pursue a promising career in the fine arts.

While still an undergraduate student, and somewhat of a prodigy, Morrison demonstrated the skill, visual sensibilities and painterly techniques reminiscent of Renaissance masters such as Rubens, Titian and Michelangelo.

After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Columbia, Morrison attended the world-renowned School of Representational Art where he studied under Bruno Surdo.

Surdo was trained, and trains his students, in the demanding representational style of the great European masters. Like Surdo, the work of Ian Morrison evokes a passion for nature and the human form.
Morrison’s mastery of figure drawing serves as the foundation for every facet of his remarkable work. His sense of proportion, scale and knowledge of human anatomy are reminiscent of Renaissance and Baroque masters of the 14th & 15th Century.
Morrison was trained in the demanding representational style of the great European masters. His prodigious collection of oil studies, many published in the compendium of his work, capture the deep emotional essence of each subject.
Discerning individuals understand that portraits capture the essence of the subject beyond anything a camera can capture. Portraits in oil, on canvas, convey something mysterious, timeless and emotionally evocative.
In addition to Morrison’s mastery as a painter and portrait artist, his skills as an illustrator are equally impressive.

Initially trained as a graphic designer in Chicago, Morrison’s interests and skills drifted toward the fine arts of drawing, painting and illustration.
